The Host of the Last Dawn “The 144”
The 144, the soldiers who came back
“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”
— 2 Timothy 4:7 (King James Version)

Introduction To The Host of the Last Dawn
The people in this section are older than the company, older than this war, and in many cases older than the bodies they wear today. Long before their current lives, they flew the great war machines of the Host of the Last Dawn. One hundred and forty-four pilots served in that unit and fought beside you during the War of the First Races. The Library groups them together because they shared that war, that machine line, and the oath they swore when it ended.
That oath still binds them. When the Host stood on the edge of defeat, the time dragon who led them offered both a plan and her own body to carry it out. Each pilot took a piece of her so they could carry her forward through time. In return, they swore they would find one another again and one day destroy the machine the Smith had built. The war ended, but the oath remained.
Most of the Host failed. Some forgot. Others chose a different path when the time came. The people in this section are those who remained true to that promise, or who are finding their way back to it now. The Library records them by the path that brought them home and the cost of that return.
Sigrid carries the shield. Through an entire lifetime of war on Talsagi, she held onto a name she could not place and never let it go. When she found you again, she stepped back into the line without hesitation. The others are still being found.
These are soldiers who have already died once for the cause you carry now. When they choose a side, they do so completely, because they have already paid the price and decided it was worth it. The Board sees them as a small group capable of changing the course of events and continues to watch for the rest of the Host.
[Hal] They came back into lives that hid what they were. A second childhood, a second war, and no one ever told them about the oath waiting underneath. They held it anyway, before they even had a word for what they were holding.
[Sytry] The Board files each of them under your company, and the file is right. It also starts a whole war too late. These soldiers stood in a unit before the Wanderers had a name, and the record only picks them up the day they walked back into yours.
