On Records That Survived Their Own Certainty

Introduction From the Library Stacks

“The truth is rarely pure and never simple.”

— Oscar Wilde, The Importance of Being Earnest (1895)

This book is not a single history, and it is not a unified doctrine. It is what remains when the Cycle is still in motion and the records keep arriving faster than certainty ever does. The Library gathered these materials because discarding contradictions has repeatedly caused more damage than preserving them. Some entries disagree. Some cannot be made to fit together without forcing them into a shape they never had. That is not a problem to solve. It is the condition the world is in.

The Machine will record sequence and outcome, and it will do so with calm precision. It does not declare which story is the “right” one, because it is not built to weigh meaning. The Library is built to keep meaning from being lost, even when meaning refuses to be neat. For that reason, the sections in this volume are organized by function rather than certainty: what the record is trying to do, what it explains, what it warns about, what it preserves, and what it leaves unresolved.

Cosmogony holds the pre-Cycle foundations: creation myths, Machine-derived models, divine testimony, philosophical treatises, and speculative frameworks recovered from unstable stacks. Many cannot coexist logically, but each has been used, at some point, to explain observed reality better than its rivals.

Gods, Devils, and External Powers catalogs forces by impact rather than alignment. Gods, devils, Outsiders, void-intelligences, and phenomena classified as Madness are grouped here because they act on the world without sharing a single origin or ethic. Intent is noted only where it creates predictable costs.

Histories & Myths gathers events as they were remembered, not as they were “resolved.” Chronologies diverge and causality fractures; entire eras survive only inside racial memory, oral accounts, and private journals. Racial myth is not separated from history here, because survival writes its own archive, and those signatures matter.

Important Locations, Places, & Residues records locations shaped by sustained exposure to power: collapsed lenses, abandoned god-works, battlefields that never cooled, and systems that persist after their makers are gone. Sites of Interest are included within this category as a practical subset, marking places where activity is ongoing and intervention remains possible.

Prophecies are kept apart because they do not behave like records. They recur, drift, and sometimes rewrite themselves when observed too closely. Discarding them has created blind spots larger than the danger of believing them.

If you are looking for a single truth, you will not find it here. If you are looking for what the Cycle does to memory, to law, and to people trying to survive inside both, then this collection will serve.

Proceed with care.
