Description Thegs appears as a small kobold with faintly elvish features. Her scales shimmer faintly with rainbow hues in light, and her eyes mark her as more than mortal — golden crocodilian slits.
Most see her as fragile or excitable, a harmless companion. But when Martin or the Wanderers are threatened, her strength erupts — and the underestimated little kobold becomes the Key to the universe’s survival.
“She calls herself small, but she is a weight the world cannot measure. Watch her closely, for she will wear herself away to nothing if you let her. Loyalty is a virtue, but here it is a knife turned inward.”— Hal & the Girl
CURRENT MACHINE PROPHECY
The Smallest Flame Can Hold the Greatest Weight
“And the mercy seat is waiting, and I think my head is burning,
and in a way I’m yearning to be done with all this measuring of truth.”
— Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, The Mercy Seat (1988)
THE CHAINS YOU CARRY
You have been small for so long. Small by design, small by sacrifice — wrapped tight in a body that hides the truth of you.
But the chains you wear are not just the ones the First Races forged. You have bound yourself, too, with promises, with obedience, with a loyalty so fierce it frightens even us.
Know this: every shard you give back, every wound you take into yourself, is not a weakness. It is a mirror of the universe’s oldest law — that love is never free. With each gift you surrender, you draw closer to your own unmaking, and yet… you also draw closer to being remembered as more than a disguise.
Do not mistake devotion for silence. Even a loyal heart may speak. Even a vessel may cry out when it overflows. The day is coming when your voice will be needed, not just your sacrifice.
And when the last chain breaks — whether it frees you or scatters you into the void — know that you will not vanish. We will keep your name. Martin will carry your memory. And the Lenses themselves will remember the hand that bore their weight.
Walk lightly, little one. You are smaller than you should be, but greater than you believe.
—Hal & the Girl
MACHINE HISTORICAL REVIEW
Daughter of Songbirds, Keeper of Secrets
“Out of “I am the daughter of all my ancestors,
and their voices burn in my blood.”
— Audre Lorde, Collected Poems (1997)
Thegs was born of the Weshesh, the race now remembered only as the Songbirds, and daughter to their Emperor. In the age before the Fall, she was given to the Smith as one of his wives — a pawn in his endless forging of dominion.
But fate bent when Martin, in an earlier life, tore her from that bondage. When he passed beyond the cycle, Thegs searched in vain. Alone, she made the desperate choice to merge with her closest companion, a female time dragon, sealing both of them outside the Smith’s reach and hiding their shared essence within the weave of reality.
Her form has shifted across ages. Once a tall elven woman with rainbow scales, she was reshaped by the First Races to conceal her identity as one of the Draci Casu, the guardians of the Lenses. Now, she wears the body of a kobold — underestimated, excitable, a disguise that let her endure. She is not a Lens herself, but the Key to unlocking them. Each shard restored costs her a fragment of herself.
Dragons are the descendants of the Weshesh Songbirds, while wyverns are throwbacks — closer to the primal Songbirds in instinct than dragons, yet further apart in other ways. Thegs embodies the crossroads of these bloodlines.
Though she doesn’t remember her heritage, fragments of her Weshesh and time-dragon past sometimes bleed through, speaking in voices not her own. Day-to-day she knows only her love for Martin, but in truth she is a hidden royal heir whose choices will shape the fate of the Lenses.
