ABOUT MARTIN AND THE WORLD

Below are the brief explanations of the main character and campaign.

ABOUT MARTIN

Martin Gray is 38 years old. He’s currently working as an assistant manager at a bodega/cafe/gas station off Highway 2 between Monroe and the pass. He gets to live rent free in his van behind the his work, as long as he pays a bit for utilities and water. 

The reason Martin is living in a van behind his job is he has so much debt that he can’t rent anywhere that has a credit check these days. At least this way, he’s on his own and has no roommates, as he likes to tell everyone. 

Between screwing around in college in his mid 20s, and wracking up unimaginable student loan debt, and having medical debt for spending time in the hospital after a serious car accident after he dropped out of college, he found working at the bodega was one of his only options. 

He doesn’t particularly like his boss, and since he’s been on his own since he was in high school because his folks decided to fuck off to Mexico and were clear they earned that money so they were going to retire there without him, he doesn’t have a lot of options. 

Currently he’s out of a 2 year relationship with his ex girlfriend Dawn, and since everything was in her name, that’s how he ended up living in his 1982 mostly working van in the back of his job. 

Martin is not the smartest, but he’s definitely not dumb. His failure at college had more to do with being young and without any support than not being smart enough to get understand. The new environment with the partying just caught up with him. 

He couldn’t even say he and his girlfriend were even in a terrible breakup. She was still his emergency contact because who knew when and if his parents would ever respond, and the extended family weren’t much better. She just wanted a kid, marriage, and an adult life, and Martin was just not prepared for that. She was getting married soon, and he couldn’t even say he hated her soon to be husband. Solid guy, and with a college degree, and they’d be having kids and he was happy for her. If a little sad he couldn’t get his own life together. 

Currently, his shit boss was being nice enough to let him stay like this, but he knew that was because she could have on site security for free, and he’d work extra shifts without too much argument. 

Mostly, he wasn’t too sure what he was going to do considering his situation. Unless he won the lottery he sure as hell wasn’t going to be able to pay off the mountain of debt that had him in this situation. He mostly feared further medical issues because the work provided insurance had a $5000 deductible and he sure as hell didn’t have that either. 

He tried not to think about it, and if nothing else he enjoyed the area and liked to spend his spare time hiking, camping, and fishing in the river. He was just drifting in life.

DESCRIPTION

• Hair: Short well cut and black. He preferred to be clean shaven, but there was always some stubble showing up because he wasn’t too organized in the morning. He has a nice Korean barber gal that cuts his hair every two weeks for him. It’s easier to live in a van with short hair. 
• Eyes: Ice blue. It was his eastern European family background. 
• Skin Tone: Naturally pale, but he tended to be tanned because of his hobbies. 
• Height: 5’10”
• Build: Not fat, but not super thin either. Just middle of the road. He wasn’t overly muscled, but he wasn’t weak. 
• Clothing: He wasn’t a flashy dresser. He tended to wear jeans or cargo shorts, and tennis shoes, along with T-shirts. Lately he’d been amused to be wearing the tourist T-shirts they sold in the shop. He tended to wear a pair of shoes until they wore out for work, but he did keep a nice pair of hiking boots, and his hiking and cam

ABOUT THE WORLD

The world is set using is a 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons. This campaign setting will utilize several different worlds material, which will be altered to fit the needs of this place.

The majority of the game will take place on the fabled dual city of Xiang Gong (modern day Hong Kong), one of the member cities of the Trade Guild. Centered on, and in the crossroads of the two largest trade routes,  the city also serves as a Gating port where gates lead off to hundreds of different areas. It serves as the southern most city of the Han empire and an oasis before the great deserts, plains and Himalayas.

Xian Gong is built upon even older ruins. No one knows when the city was built, nor who built it. It is not known if the travel gates that appear almost randomly were here before the original city, or if the original inhabitants did something to cause them.

Surrounded by and sitting on ancient ruins whose wealth could support nations itself, and in the center of the storms of magic make the city an adventurer’s dream. The fact that people can travel by gate to the far areas of the world, just increases the value of the area.

The one disadvantage for adventurers is all adventuring must be sanctioned within the areas of the trade cities and the Han Empire (along with other kingdoms), this means they MUST be part of an adventuring guild.

The Wealth of the Laughing Buddha (Guild of Adventurers headquartered in Xiang Gong) controls most organized adventuring in and around the city, and the Guild of Merchants tend to control the ancillary support trades such as armor-smithing, weapon making, gate travel, potion creation and other “entertainment” services that any adventurer might need.

The campaign will be focused on an adventurer Martin Gray and his group.
